Our Process: How We Do What We Do
Introduction to Our Process
Project Launch
Sherri begins each design project with a site visit. She will seek to understand the possibilities and restrictions of your space as well as various functions the space needs to serve. Seeing your space in person is crucial to understanding the flow between rooms, lighting, views, etc… – all the little details that make your home or workplace unique. We will be discussing the project scope that’s right for you, and how hands-on you would like us to be in terms of project management. During the initial design consultation, Sherri will take photos and measurements, as well as document existing furniture pieces and accessories that may remain so she can hit the ground running when she returns to the studio where the magic begins.
Design Phase
Once the in home consultation is complete, we will use the information gathered to begin formulating a beautiful and functional custom design that is uniquely tailored to your needs, wishes, and desires. During the design phase, Sherri will roll up her sleeves and begin working towards making the vision a reality. First, we create floor plans and elevations for each space, and test various layouts for furniture. At this phase, design is intentionally sketchy – these drawings should serve as a basis for a conversation about what layout makes the most sense. We will send layout proposals via email and then set up a project phone call to discuss pros and cons of each layout to refine your design plan.
Shopping for Details
Once your space plan is established, Sherri will do product research to source furniture to fulfill the agreed-upon room layout as well as to select paint colors and wall coverings, window treatments, flooring samples, decorative accessories, wall art, lighting, area rugs, furniture, and more, with your aesthetic and functional goals in mind. We deliver these proposals to you through a combination of electronic and hard-copy swatches and samples. Whenever possible, we will source furniture from local stores where you can sample the comfort and quality in person. Shopping trips to local showrooms are often included in this phase, whether it’s a cabinetry or granite showroom for a kitchen redesign project, tile and fixture showrooms for bathrooms, or furniture, rug and lighting showrooms for a living room or bedroom. If custom upholstery or drapery is needed, we’ll provide you with quotes from our tried and true vendors as well. Rest assured, Sherri will never mark-up product, and in fact can sometimes save you money through established trade discount programs offered to professional designers.
Once a design is agreed upon, Sherri will provide you a complete visual design packet. Your portfolio will include a scaled floor plan, design images, swatches and product price list. We will have selected many items including but not limited to: wall coverings, lighting, flooring, area rugs, furniture, bedding, storage, trim work, artwork, accessories and more.
Design Implementation
Once we’ve agreed upon the products and design elements that will fulfill your vision for the space, Sherri can begin ordering and purchasing agreed upon accessories and furnishings. It may also be time for you to hire a painter, contractor, electrician or other tradespeople to implement the design. We can provide you with names of our trusted tradespeople and contractors who may be a good fit for your project. We are also happy to be in touch with building professionals you already know and trust. Although we do not provide construction management services, there are other ways we can assist during the implementation phase. We are happy to help you obtain multiple contractor quotes and Sherri will even return after the contractors have completed their work, painters are finished and furniture is delivered, to complete your space by staging accessories, hanging wall art and providing the personal touches that will complete your dream room.
